Early Birthday Celebration and Spotted Brown Cow

Hubby and I started celebrating my b-day a couple of days early. On the way home, after going to a spa, a bookstore and watching a great movie, we stopped by Whole Foods where I met a friendly cow, whom I shall name Ginger. She was a sweet creature and a friendly one at that... Unfortunately she was out by a sign [you see only a corner of it on the left side] which advertised their specialty stake ;(

I gave Ginger a promise not to eat her or her young ones, or take their milk from them. Ginger was very happy :)

I will share more fun images from today later on this week.
Have a fantastic day and stay away from COWS! [except to pet them ;)]

Feels Like Christmas in my Kitchen

I was hard at work today, working on a client's images when I heard a knock on the door.  It was a UPS delivery man.  I nearly jumped out of my skin, excited!

A few weeks ago I entered a giveaway on Raw Epicurean blog and walked away with a prize from Mountain Rose Herbs.  Once I heard that I won the giveaway I started to count days till "the arrival".  I was getting anxious--I checked my mailbox every single day, and finally today the package made it to my door.

I opened the box and began to dig through its contents:
Every single item was wrapped in its own bubble wrap.  It looked like it was going to be a lot of fun to open my present...  It felt like Christmas!  But, I think there must have been a mad elf at the factory packing my belated gift--every item was not only wrapped in bubble wrap, it was TAPED over, and over, and over again.  It took FOREVER to get my new kitchen mates out of their prison.

First I worked on oils, then on various pepper blends:
[pretty, aren't they? ;)]

Then I made my way to salts and seasonings:
I can hardly wait to try different varieties of salts, peppers and herbs, not to mention oils.

Thank you Raw Epicurean and Mountain Rose Herbs for a Christmas in January!

Now I can barely wait to get my hands on a Kitchen Aid mixer that I am planning to get in the near future from CSN stores.  If you go to their site you will find about anything you can imagine: office furniture, bar stools, kitchen gadgets and even modern rugs.

You all have a fantastic day!

Careful Who You Listen To

I have to vent.  I hope you listen.

Last night hubby and I were relaxing in front of a TV.  We watched Ask Oprah's All Stars, which we found quite entertaining.  At the end of the show, however, Dr. Oz, as he does once in a while, said something really.... well, not really bright--let's just leave it at that.

At the end of the show he was asked by the host of the show, Robin Meade:

"Dr. Oz, what's your action plan for all of us for the week?"

Here is his "brilliant answer" [emphasis, and some of my outbursts in parenthesis are added by me ;)]:

"For me it's about a very deep epiphany, and that's that food is sacred. When I walk in to a grocery store, to me it feels like I'm walking into a pharmacy. [So far so good, right?!] That's how powerful nutrients are to our body. So, my assignment is to tantalize your taste buds. I want you to push the limits a little bit and try foods you haven't tried before."

He goes on to talk suggest trying unsalted pumpkin seeds, steel cut oatmeal, black currents, pomegranates.  I love his "educated" statement:
About steel cut oats: "It's got B vitamins, all kinds of crazy things that are good for ya."  Really?  I did not realize that "all kinds of crazy things" is now a valid scientific statement. I know that even I would not use it when talking to people about nutrition.  Can we identify what "all kinds of crazy things" are?

It gets better: "Anything with these dark colors, and especially pomegranates, for example, are great for ya, because those dark colors are there to give these nutrients that they need to protect themselves from the outside world. When you eat them you get those nutrients."  Wow!  That is truly scientifically  said.  Can we say that pomegranates are full of antioxidants, for example?

What finally got me is his statement about eggs: "And finally, the egg, which is probably the best value in food out there. Wonderful source of protein. [Really?  How about I show you where I get my protein, Dr. Oz?!] You wanna lose weight, have eggs for breakfast in the morning. [This keeps getting better and better--if eggs could cause weight loss why half of Americans who crack them every morning, or go to McDonalds for their breakfast egg-McMuffins still have bellies?!] And by the way, eggs do not elevate your cholesterol, being fat does. So cut out the sugar and start eatin' the eggs. You want solid important proteins. [It's] the only white food that I endorse."

So, by now I am ready to crawl out of my skin.  Eggs don't elevate cholesterol?  Are you kidding me, Dr. Oz?

But... it gets even better [emphasis mine]: "You know, the yolk is not what gets your cholesterol high. Eating cholesterol does not raise your blood cholesterol except for a rare percentage of Americans. Most Americans get big bellies and that's what gives them high cholesterol. And egg per se is - costs almost nothin'. Make sure you cook it so you don't get salmonella. But you're good to go in terms of your diet for a long, long time."

Dr. Oz, are you really kidding me?  I personally know thin people with high  cholesterol.  My husband used to be one of them.  Interestingly it [his cholesterol] dropped from 220 to 149 in 9 months when we switched to a plant-based diet.  Maybe you should study nutrition before giving an advice to millions of people who are listening to you?!  Or, perhaps, stick to talking about medicine, teaching us things like what a wenus is?!

Chicken eggs have the genetic make up of a chicken--they are undeveloped baby chicks--full of cholesterol, because they need their cholesterol for their development. If you eat an egg you might as well eat the chicken!  I would concur with a former participant of another show I am now enjoying: Conviction Kitchen. When the whole team goes to the farm for a real "farmer's breakfast"--raw eggs and then butchers and plucks chicken, one of the participants walks off and calls eggs "chicken abortion".  I totally agree with her!  If we don't move chicken off her eggs, every single one of them has a chance of becoming a chicken.
[Some people/countries practice eating a developed, but unhatched chicken embryo as a delicacy.  Sounds atrocious, doesn't it? But eating a fresh egg is eating the same thing only at a different stage of development.]

So, dear reader, be careful who you listen to.  Having a recognizable name, your own TV show, or being endorsed by a big name celebrity does not make one educated and right about everything.  Do your research, expand your horizons, and know--food with cholesterol will raise your cholesterol.  I am not a doctor, but I do have personal experience in this field ;).

Biggest Winner Challenge Update

Remember the Biggest Winner Challenge I ran last year? If you don't read up on it quickly. :) You won't regret it.

A few days ago, while we were doing on 3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, I received an e-mail from Barb [second from the right], who also participated in the Cleanse.  It was the coolest e-mail ever.  Here is what she told me:

"Elena,

I had an optical appointment yesterday. My doc looked me in the eyes after my exam and he said

"OK, spill it, what are you doing differently??? Your eyes are healthier than they were 3 years ago!"

I was SO excited! I told him that I gave up all processed foods, I am exercising and eat much, MUCH less dairy. Thank you, Elena, for coming into my life. You have helped me alot.

Love ya,
Barb"

Just imagine how excited I was to hear that.  This is one more proof that a whole foods, plant based [vegan] diet can help us not only treat and prevent, but reverse current health conditions, even the ones we don't expect.

By the way, Barb lost additional 5 lbs on this recent cleanse.  She now resolved to do a Cleanse at least once a month and keep drinking green smoothies.

3 Green Smoothie Recipes

As promised in my last post, here are the three recipes I whipped up yesterday for my hubby for his 3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse [these will last him about 1.5-2 days, especially with my help ;)].

Papaya Parsley Green Smoothie
  • 2-3 cups water
  • 1/2 bunch parsley
  • 3 large leaves collard greens
  • 2 cups papaya
  • 1 ripe pear
  • 2 tbsp dulse flakes [optional]
  • 2 tbs hemp seeds [optional]

Clementine Romaine Green Smoothie
  • 2-3 cups water
  • 1 head romaine lettuce
  • 2 bananas [fresh or frozen]
  • 3 clementines
  • 1/2 bunch parsley

Orange Collards Green Smoothie
  • 2-3 cups water
  • 5 large leaves collard greens
  • 1 apple, cored
  • 2 oranges, peeled and seeded

For all three, place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.  Green smoothies can be stored in a refrigerator up to 3 days.  I strongly suggest using glass containers only, as plastic will leach harmful chemicals into your food.

Enjoy! And consider joining my husband on his modified 3-day green smoothie challenge.

3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse [Challenge] -- Round 2

Round 2 Anyone?
You might think I am crazy... but it is not me.  My husband decided, as of yesterday morning, that he wants to do another 3-day Green Smoothie Challenge.  During the first one he felt great and shed 3 lbs [not that he needs to lose any].  I thought he was satisfied.  However, it looks like he wants MORE!

So, being the loving wife that I am yesterday, while making my delicious veg nog, I whipped up 6 jars of green smoothies for him, so all he has to do is eat them. [I will post all three recipes in the next post.]

I marked them all nicely and neatly with an erasable market so he would know what he is eating.  [I told you--I am a good wife ;).]  All he has to do is... well, not much really.

He has a physically demanding job and also loves to work out.  So, I tried to dissuade him from doing smoothies only, not unless he was going to tone down his activity level, and convince him to keep his greens intake high, while still consuming at least one solid meal a day... Did he listen?  Nope!

He went to the gym, did a full body workout, then had a full day at work... Needless to say I got a call from him, before his workday was over.  He pleaded for more food--the two jars that he took with him that were supposed to support his body for 5 hours were GONE!  I took care of him when he got home and I think he learned his lesson: "listen to your wife!"

He will still continue with the challenge, however, on his workdays he will add one solid meal into his diet--which is totally perfect.

Are you In?
So, with this modification: one solid/cooked meal a day [still vegan though] and the rest being green smoothies, do you feel that you can join him in the challenge?  He certainly would like the company. If you would like to join and already have your Green Smoothie Cleanse e-guide, just leave a note under this post and I will let him know.  If you don't have your guide yet, you can get it now! ;)

Vegan Egg Nog [Veg Nog]? Yes Please! [Daniel Fast Approved Recipe]

If you did not know, I am not originally from the USA.  For that reason eggnog [or egg nog ;)] had never sounded attractive to me.  I never wanted to drink something with raw eggs in it.  Now, I  do know that the eggnog sold as the store is not really raw, but the whole idea of drinking an egg left my mind a little traumatized.

I did taste eggnog on a couple of occasions but it did not stick with me.  No fascination whatsoever!  After changing my diet to vegan I had been delivered from the possibility of that ever happening at all.

Interestingly enough during Christmas season as I was scrolling through some foodie blogs and saw an eggnog or two and decided to give it a whirl and try to create something similar, but better.  {Considering that I did not like eggnog it would be easy to do;).}

So, last night, on the way back from the gym I stopped by the grocery store to get my ingredients [unfortunately I had still forgotten one ;( --nutmeg].

This morning, right after brushing my teeth, I headed off to the kitchen to whip up my breakfast.  I made green smoothies for my hubby, who decided to go on yet another 3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse [more about that in the next post], and magic happened!  I made my version of eggnog... but enough with the egg part, let's call it vegnog [veg nog].  Sounds awesome?  [SIDENOTE: I thought it did and that I was totally original until I just now googled my new cool term... *sigh* My bubble is burst!  I am not as original as I thought ;( .]

It was good... good enough for me to want to share it with all of you, so I had to make it again, to get all of my measurements down.

Here it is, enjoy it!  And, by the way, this recipe is Daniel Fast approved too!

Elena's Veg Nog
Ingredients
try to use all organic ingredients if possible
  • 2 frozen banans
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 3 clementines
  • 1-1.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups coconut milk [I used SO DELICIOUS brand]
  • 2 tbsp raw honey [you can use maple or agave syrup instead]
  • sprinkle of sea salt [about 1/8 tsp or less]
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg, or to taste [as I mentioned I forgot to buy nutmeg but I wish I had it!]
  • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
 Garnish
  • 1-2 tbsp chocolate shavings [vegan, of course ;)  I used my favorite Black & Green brand 70% chocolate]
Preparation
  • Place all ingredients in a high speed blender and blend until smooth.  Do not overblend, not to defrost the bananas completely.
  • Sprinkle chocolate shavings on top and enjoy!
The Veg Nog was super delicious! I think I even slurped when I drank it though a straw, once I got to the bottom of my glass.

3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse [Challenge] RESULTS

3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse was a blast! 30 participants signed up to do the cleanse.  After the cleanse I heard back from 18.  Here are the RESULTS:

18 people lost a total of
90 lbs!

That would make an average of 5 lbs per person.  However, some lost more than others, of course--I had 2 participants who lost 10 lbs each.

Isn't that FANTASTIC?

Following health observations were made by those who participated:
  • My digestive system has improved.
  • My fingernails are now growing in strong as they have always been brittle.
  • I have become so much more aware of what I am putting in my body and how I am feeling physically.
  • I noticed that I feel lighter and greasy food does not interest me, I am craving fruit and veggies.
  • I lost 9.6 lbs! I’m definitely sticking with the smoothies on a daily basis for breakfast and probably most lunches and starting next Thursday, Thursday’s will be entirely a smoothie day.
  • My skin is looking better. I have noticed the last couple of days it looks a little more elastic and not so tight in my face.
  • Thanks for all the encouragement! I lost 4 lbs.  I am now more resolved to eat healthier.
  • I didn't expect to lose any weight; however, a step on the scale this morning reveals that I have lost 2 lbs.  Plus, my tummy has such a flatter look about it that even sit ups weren't able to conquer. I love the looser way my pants fit!!
  • The inexplicable dry patches on my body are healing themselves marvelously (my lips, my feet, my elbows, even a patch on my shoulder).  The blemishes on my face are also healing up. My hands are softer than I can remember them being in ages. I've always eaten a fairly healthy diet, but this cleanse has been a great jump start to eating even healthier.
  • I observed how I felt more energized, slept better, was less irritable and felt cleaner. I am also less bloated in my stomach and not suffering with bouts of gas, as I was before this cleanse.
  • I loved your recipes! I wasn't doing the challenge to lose weight, but I did lose 4 lbs!
  • I lost 10 lbs and my knees do not hurt anymore!
All of these reports are the reason, dear readers, I love eating healthy and teaching others how to do so.  I believe that the food is given to us not just for enjoyment, although there is nothing like good tasting foods, but primarily for nourishment and health.  Yes, HEALTH!  Natural foods, in their unaltered state, are healing.  They have an army of enzymes, nutrients, minerals and vitamins that God made to continually heal our bodies and to keep them whole.

I believe that more than 85% of diseases are preventable AND reversible.  There are certain times, like accidents, birth complications, etc., that cannot be resolved by foods, but the rest of what plagues us CAN!  So, I would encourage you all to take your health into your own hands, like we did.  Become your own advocate.

A VERY wise man once said:

"Let thy food be thy medicine, and they medicine thy food." {Hippocrates} I could not agree with him more.

So, if you have not yet answered the call to do your own green smoothie cleanse, you can do it at any time, as often as you would like to.  In fact, one of the participants told me that from now on she will do 3-Day Cleanse once a month!  Another, as you read above, will have a Green Smoothie Day.  These people found what is good for them and they are going to benefit from it.

What about you?  If you are now encouraged to do a cleanse of your own, head on over to the 3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse post to find out all the details and start on your way to better health.

Raw Vegan Kale Chips Revisited {Daniel Fast Approved Recipe}

About a month ago I blogged a recipe for Raw Kale Chips.  I made them personally then for the first time and, although I liked them, I did not think I would make them too often. I think that my husband had successfully changed my mind since.

At the end of our 3-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, which went fantastically by the way, he had a craving for chips.  Well, we could not have regular chips out of the bag, but GREEN kale chips fit the bill perfectly--we would still get our greens and his taste buds would be satisfied.

I was preoccupied in the office, so the making of kale chips fell on hubby's shoulders.  After all he was the one who wanted them.  He came to the office, moved me away from the computer for a minute, went to this blog [yes, we go back to my blog for recipes I post! ;)], wrote down the recipe, and made kale chips on his own!

In a very few short hours the chips were done and I have to tell you they were A-MA-ZING! I ended up eating more than half of them.  They simply melted in my mouth.  I think he made them better than I did.
this time we used purple kale

The chips are perfect for a cleanse, for healthy eating, and for Daniel Fast.  You simply cannot go wrong with making these.
this is hubby's way of saying: "these are mine! get your own!"
I see more kale chips in my future.

PS: If you do not have a dehydrator but would love to try this recipes, you can dehydrate chips in an oven, on low heat. It will still take a few hours; you might lose more enzymes that way, but the chips will still be great and nutritious.

Camp Blogaway: Vote for... Elena!

I feel like starting off this post with this:

Why? Let me tell you.

I am a member of Healthy Living Blogs.  They ladies who are running the site are doing something extremely special--they are giving away one registration to Camp Blogaway--a bootcamp for food and recipe bloggers [people like me, that is].  It's a 3 day bootcamp for food bloggers to get together and learn how to be even better bloggers.

I think I should go! I think I owe it to my readers... and it has been a dream of mine for a long time.

WHY?
I started blogging almost 3 years ago.  It happened quite organically [naturally ;)] and the only reason I started was to help people improve their health through foods.

After my hubby and I went vegan 4 years ago we had a lot of misunderstanding from our families.  If you think you ever felt awkward around yours, we had taken that feeling to a whole different level.  As the time went on, however, they started to ask questions.  Why? How? And what do you eat? The questions were repeated over and over again.  I sent out a ton of e-mails and finally thought that what I was saying was so repetitive that there should be a central repository for all of my answers and a place where I can share our favorite recipes.  So... I started this blog

Little did I know that I would eventually fall in love with blogging and helping others.  It became a passion.  Not for the sake of blogging but because we started to hear back from the readers about the changes in their lives due to reading my blog.  I could not stop! And trust me I tried...

Here are some of the examples of why food and nutrition blogging became addicting to me:

1. My husband and I lost 90 lbs [combined] due to the change in our diet, while eating delicious foods that I blog about.  We also reversed severe health conditions with vegan diet and exercise: his cholesterol went from 220 to 149 in 9 months, chest pains that tormented him went away, his skin cleared up; as for me, I reversed hypothroidism, got rid of depression [which really, really hurt], restored luster in my skin, got rid of dry eye syndrome, reversed runner's knee condition.  I could go on with my list, but you can read all about here

2. Through blogging I was able to start offering cooking classes in which I taught others how to eat well and stay well at the same time. The outcomes at times were amazing--some of my students changed their  dietary lifestyles as a result.

3. I hosted the Biggest Winner Challenge, helping two families on the path to better health through food.  Total weight loss for 3 people at the end of the challenge was 76.5 lbs!  The health improvements were astonishing to boot: we discovered that two of the participants were allergic to gluten, as a result they were able to heal from eczema that tormented them for years; they slept better; high blood pressure dropped, sleep apnea went away, eye sight improved.  All of that due to a better diet and delicious recipes that you find on this blog.

4. We just got done hosting a 3-day Green Smoothie Cleanse.  30 people participated.  12 reported their results: total weight loss 66.8 lbs; improved skin health, better sleep, and I think that one of the participants discovered that she might be allergic to gluten, which means that she now will be able to get better.

5. One of my favorite stories: in June of 2010 I was contacted by a new blog reader, who told me that she was border line Diabetic and had tons of health issues.  Her doctor told her that she needed to go on a plant based diet [that was a miracle in itself] to save her health.  As she searched the net for help and for recipes she stumbled upon my blog.  We stayed in touch.  She subscribed to the blog and to the Newsletter I send out to my readers.  She just sent me an e-mail a couple of days back, after taking part in the 3-day cleanse, telling me this [and this brought joy to my heart]:

"Well the 3-day Green Smoothie cleanse is over , but wanted to let you know that I have lost another 4.2 lbs! That makes it a total of 6.2 for all 3 days...Yipeee!

From the beginning of June until today I have lost 63 lbs. I am so amazed. I still have more weight to lose, but this makes it so much easier than any other way of eating and I feel so much better and a lot more energy plus my Doctor says healthier. I will always eat Vegan for the rest of my life.

Thanks Elena for your support through all of this. Going to your Blog and the recipes and just knowing you're there helps. You're my support person. Thanks, Lori"

6. I met a lot of great food, health and fitness bloggers, whom otherwise I would not have had a chance to meet.

I can go on about other great things that make food and recipe blogging rewarding, but I think you get the gist of it.
So, I would really, really love to be picked for the Camp Blogaway registration giveaway by fabulous girls of Healthy Living Blogs.  I stand to learn even more than I know, to be a better blogger and to help even more people achieve optimal health through living foods.

A girl can dream :)

Where do You get Protein? {Vegan} [Part II]

Top of the morning to you, loves!  Let's finish our Protein conversation, shall we?

If you ever wondered about this or had someone as you personally: "So, where do vegans get their protein?" you might want to read on.  However, make sure that you read Part I of Where do You get Protein? {Vegan} first. [Both, this current installment and the last article will also help any questions about protein source for anyone doing a Daniel Fast.]

Let's get to it! But first, check out what vegan protein does for my husband's muscle growth:
thanks to my husband for modeling :)

Which foods are good sources of Protein?
The amazing part of the answer is that most plants have some protein in them. It is truly unfortunate that the dairy and the meat companies along with media created this myth that the only true source of protein we have is animal products.

History proves that it was not always so. Actually, it was not until the beginning of the 20th century, as the wages started to go up and employment was not as scarce as it was for centuries passed, that a common man was even able to afford such luxury foods as eggs, milk, cheeses and, especially meat. When I was growing up overseas, we did not have meat in every meal we consumed. Most of our meals were plant based and only occasionally did we have a chicken to share among the entire family in a week’s time. Milk was more readily available, but dairy products, such as cheeses, were more of a special occasion treat. Interestingly enough we were no sicker than the Americans. On the contrary, the population of our country was slimmer, with less coronary related diseases, and very few cancer cases compared to the American statistics. The allergies were not very common as well as obesity was almost an unknown phenomenon.

So, where did we get our protein? Are you ready for the answer?! Same place animals do, of course—Plants!

It is almost naïve to think that animals, somehow miraculously covert sunshine or air into protein in their bodies. The animals eat grass (for the most part, or at least they should, as God intended it), and then their bodies extract needed nutrients to make protein, just like ours do. So, as you can see, we can, in fact, get a better quality protein by skipping the middle “man”, by going straight to the source.

Here are just a few sources that will give you an idea of where to look for protein: oatmeal, brown rice, peas, lentils, legumes, nuts, dark colored greens, etc. Just to give you an idea of how easy it is to get your daily protein intake, here is a comparison between animal and plant protein:

100 calories (about 1.5 oz.) of steak has 13 grams of protein
steak, aka dead, decaying, hard to digest  flesh

• 100 calories (15 oz.) of spinach has 12 grams of protein
rich in enzymes, living, vitamin rich food, 100% digestible

• 100 calories (2 tablespoons) of raw chickpeas has 5 grams of protein
delicious, warming, rich in fiber

• Sweet fruit averages about 4-8% protein
delicious, irresistible droplets of pleasure, rich in enzymes

• Leafy greens and veggies are about 15 to 20% protein
you can chews on 'em, or drink them

• Sprouts [the most digestible source of protein] are up to 35% protein of their content
eat them in a sandwich, or top your favorite salad with them: Delicious!

So, next time you start worrying about your protein needs being met, think about the simplest most digestible form of protein available—plant protein; skip the middle “man” (animal products) and get straight to the source.

How much protein should we eat each day?
The average American consumes 15-20% of protein, which is much higher than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 10%. 10% dietary protein is equivalent to eating about 50-60 grams of protein per day. The national average of 15-16% is about 70-100 grams of protein.

World Health Organizations recommends only 5% of calorie intake as protein, 6% for pregnant women and 7% for women who are nursing. By these figures, even if you are an avid athlete and are burning 3,000 calories a day, you need only around 37 grams of protein. By looking at the figures I have provided above you can easily realize how effortless it is to get all the protein you need in just a few servings of plant foods.

These days, most people suffer from protein overdose, resulting in many of our modern day illnesses. If you’re interested in reading more on the subject, read The China Study by T. Colin Campbell.

As far as I know, and I have studied this subject extensively and applied it in my own life, there is more than ample protein in the raw/vegan food diet.

Is too much protein bad for you?
Glad that you asked! It is a question that begs to be answered, especially following the statements I had just made.

The only harmful protein that you can consume is animal protein. The more you consume of it, the more risk you are placing yourself in and making yourself more susceptible to various diseases, such as coronary diseases, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, various forms of cancer, skin problems, hormone imbalances, etc.
On the other hand, studies have shown (refer to The China Study) that plant protein, regardless of how much of it you consume, is not harmful at all. It is also important to note that when we consume whole plant based diet (i.e. unprocessed and as close to its natural state as possible) it is almost impossible to overeat on any give nutrient. From my observation and personal experience I find it altogether impossible. The rich content of fiber, enzymes, vitamins, nutrients and minerals makes you feel full faster, thus preventing overeating.

Protein conversion
Protein, when consumed, is converted by our bodies into energy. The process can be likened to gas to energy conversion in cars. The cleaner the gas the less toxicity is involved. As with cars, you don’t want any toxic residue staying behind in your body and poisoning you from within. To avoid toxic pollution internally you have to take the cleanest form of protein possible—plant protein.

On a plant based diet, since protein intake is cleaner and less in quantity than average intake on SAD (Standard American Diet) the body is able to operate more efficiently and utilize every bit of protein you give it. If you do not agree with me, just think about all Thanksgiving dinners you have been to, where animal protein is to be the king. Instead of becoming more energetic after eating all turkey and ham imaginable, the pants and belts get loosened, happy eaters slide back in their seats to give room for air to get into their lungs, and go into “protein” coma. Their bodies work extra hard to push the dead weight (pun intended) of animal flesh down to their stomach, where it sits anywhere between 4-7 hours and then into the intestinal tract. I don’t know about you, but I can hardly call this kind of protein “life giving”. Living foods, such as vegetables and greens, take less than an hour to pass through your stomach and head on into the intestinal tract.

Another thing you should consider is the design of the human body. Our gastro-intestinal tract is long and increases the transit time of food from the time of its intake to the time of its disposal. If foods are consumed that are devoid of fiber, such as animal food, we end up with a lot of putrefaction—rotting of animal protein our bodies are trying to digest.

Pick quality Protein sources!!!

Bottom Line
The bottom line is that you don’t need to consume flesh foods (that included dairy as well) to meet your protein needs. Eat foods that make sense—foods that are easily digestible and are easy to eliminate; foods that will give you energy instead of foods that will deprive you of energy. Think long-term, not immediate pleasure.

Parting Thought
Animal protein, such as found in milk, is only 50% digestible by the human body. Plant and human protein, such as found in breast milk, is 100% digestible.  You do the math what's best for you!  I know what works for us :)!

Where do You get Protein? {Vegan} [Part I]

As someone who eats a 100% vegan diet I am constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY, asked this question: "But where do you get your protein?"

In the beginning of our vegan journey [4 years ago!], I took the time to explain it.  Eventually I got smarter and instead of answering the question, I would first ask a question in return: "Can you tell me what Protein is?"  Over 90% of the people did not know.  They also failed to know what protein is for.  With education on the topic of protein lacking it is really pointless to tell people where to get protein.  We first must understand what protein is.

What is Protein?
Protein became the new American mantra about 100 years ago. A nutrition researcher Max Rubner (1854-1932) stated that meat protein intake was a symbol of civilization itself: “A right protein allowance is the right of a civilized man.” People almost get a religious glow on their faces when they talk about it, and they get indignant when you suggest they quit meats and dairy, since they were led to believe that is the only true source of protein. Interestingly enough, when, instead of answering their question, I ask them a question: “What is protein?” they have a blank look on their face.

So, before I tell you where and how you get your protein, let me tell you what protein is.

Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids. There are 22 different types of amino acid and our bodies need all of them to function properly.

Amino acids are chemical compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, which combine together into different structures to form the various types of protein that the body requires.

There are many forms of protein, which all play an important role in the function of the body. For example, collagen is a protein and is vital for the strength, elasticity and composition of our hair and skin.

Proteins, through digestion, are broken down into individual amino acids. The amino acids are then absorbed and reform in order to create new proteins that are then used by the body.

The 22 types of amino acid are divided into two groups: essential and non-essential amino acids.

Out of the 22 there are 14 non-essential amino acids. They are termed non-essential because they can be manufactured by the body, the rest have to be derived from food, thus they are dubbed essential.

Now, it does not mean that non-essential amino acids are not important! Not at all! Without them the new proteins that are formed by the body cannot be properly formed.

I am sure that now you are curious to know what amino acids are essential. Well, ok, since you asked. But make sure to memorize them and recite in your dream. So here we go: phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, isoleucine, methionine, leucine, and lysine. Shoosh… you must feel so much smarter now—you can memorize these to impress your friends at the next dinner party.

Cysteine (or sulphur-containing amino acids), tyrosine (or aromatic amino acids), histidine and arginine are additionally required by infants and growing children.

The amino acids arginine, cysteine, glycine, glutamine, histidine, proline, serine and tyrosine are considered conditionally essential, meaning they are not normally required in the diet, but must be supplied exogenously to specific populations that do not synthesize it in adequate amounts. I hope that you are feeling much more enlightened now. So, next time you think about protein you might actually know what it means.

Complete and incomplete Proteins
Some foods contain all of the 8 essential amino acids. These foods are called “complete” and are considered to be of superior quality. Interestingly enough, modern science has discovered that the proteins that are closest to ours can be found in animal products only and thus labeled it “complete”.

The incomplete proteins are usually lacking one or more of the essential amino acids. They are generally found in plants, such as vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and legumes. Since these protein sources have labeled “incomplete” they have been written off and the society decided that the only way to meet our protein requirements is through consuming animal foods.

What you are not told and don’t know, though, is that by combining two or more of the “incomplete” proteins, a complete supply of essential amino acids can be made available. For example rice and beans will form a “complete” protein and give your body all the essential amino acids it needs. And… you don’t even have to eat these two at the same meal to get that—your body will do that for you!

The Role of Protein
So, now that you know what protein (complete and incomplete) is, you curiosity might be finally be peaking enough to know WHY you need proteins at all. I am glad you are thinking about that.

Protein is required by the body for growth, maintenance and repair of all cells.  Protein is a major component of muscles, tissues and organs and is essential for nearly all processes that occur in our bodies, such as metabolism, digestion and even transporting nutrients and oxygen in the blood.
this is what vegan source of protein can do for muscle growth ;)

Protein is also responsible for the production of antibodies, which fight against invaders: illness, infection, etc. It is also responsible for the main nutrient that keeps our hair healthy and shiny, our skin fresh and glowing, our nails and our bones strong and healthy.

Part II
Next time we will complete reviewing the role of Protein and will further look into:
  • Which foods are good sources of Protein
  • How much Protein you need
  • Is too much Protein bad for you, and
  • Protein Conversion
